Dr. Shahriar Hossain - popularly known as Hossain Shahriar, and his organization ESDO, pioneered a nation-wide anti polythene / plastic movement. Dr. Shahriar spent 13 years campaigning and lobbying against the manufacture and use of plastic bags. His efforts and contributions have been declared as a significant millstone towards achieving environmental protection.

Dr. Shahriar initiated the “Eco-village” concept – a holistic initiative to promote conservation and environmentally sustainable livelihoods for communities in Bangladesh. He began working on the Eco-village model in a small village of Bangladesh (Munshiganj), where community members have seen tremendous improvements to their lives and the environment.

Since 1990, Dr. Shahriar has worked on a volunteer basis to build the capacity of communities to care for the environment through his organization ESDO. Dr. Shahriar’s commitment and dedication to social justice has also found him working closely with mentally handicapped children, to ensure their equity in society.

Dr. Shahriar is now living his long-term dream of working as an environmental activist and accomplishing his mission to serve nature and society.
